Zambia arrests 11 people over wildlife crimes

LUSAKA, March. 8 (Xinhua) -- Wildlife authorities of western Zambia on Tuesday arrested 11 people over wildlife crimes.

Among those arrested in the provincial capital of Mongu, four women and three men, were found with 412 kilograms of hippo meat while four other men with two pairs of ivories cut in six pieces, according to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.

The department said in a statement that the 11 suspects were arrested for unlawful dealing in proscribed trade.

The wildlife agency expressed concern that the western part of the country has seen an increase in wildlife crimes and has been used as a transit route, adding that the department has intensified patrol measures to contain the situation.
