MADRID, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Struggling Spanish Liga Santander outfit Malaga confirmed Michel Gonzalez as their new first team coach on Tuesday, hours after sacking Marcelo Romero.

Romero stepped down after 10 games in charge in which the side managed just one win and one draw, after he had replaced Juande Ramos, who resigned in December.

Former Real Madrid midfielder, Michel has ample coaching experience, beginning his career in the Real Madrid youth system before coaching Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, Sevilla, Olympiacos and Olympique Marseilles with varying degrees of success.

Malaga announced the appointment on the club's official website along with declarations from the new coach, who said it was "an honor to join this great club. I am happy and looking forward to starting work."

Michel takes over a club in fifteenth position in the league table with just 26 points from 26 games and will make his debut when Malaga entertain Alaves on Saturday night.
