BUDAPEST, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The migration pressure only slowed down but did not stop, and Hungary needed to strengthen its defense, Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned on Tuesday.

Orban made the statement at the initiation ceremony of 462 new police officers, who will be serving as border guards.

"Although the news speak of hundreds, and not ten of thousands of illegal aliens crossing the borders, we cannot lay back, as we only gained some time between two sieges, time to fortify our defenses, time to recruit, train and put in duty our new border guards," Orban said.

"The storm pacified, but did not end yet," he added. The migration pressure on the borders would still persist for the coming years, because millions of people were still waiting to come to Europe, he said.

"They want European living standards, but they do not want to live by our customs and culture," he warned.

Orban also blamed the European Union for not helping Hungary with the protection of its borders.

"We cannot count on the European Union. Moreover, they are only making things harder. We have to rely on ourselves to defend our borders," he said.

He called the new border guards the "protectors of Hungarian freedom and future", and asked the new policemen to do their work with "firmness", but also with "humanity".

Orban also said the migration crisis would continue until the root causes were eliminated, but underlined that Hungary was one of the safest countries in the world.

He also reminded its audience that the new laws had to be respected by all. Earlier Tuesday, the Hungarian parliament adopted the amendment of its anti-migrant legislation.

The amendment concerned the law on the treatment of asylum seekers, which was supplemented with regulations due to the national crisis situation.

According to it, Hungarian police will detain and bring back to the transit zones every illegal alien found deeper inside the territory of Hungary. Prior to the modification, the police had the right to transport the illegal aliens from only an 8-km wide band from the Hungarian border.
