Tokyo stocks close mixed as Wall Street sets weak tone, transport sector advances

TOKYO, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed on Tuesday as a poor showing on Wall Street overnight set a weak tone early on, although the transportation sector advanced on reports that Yamato Transport Co., a leading delivery service, plans to raise its base shipping fees.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 34.99 points, or 0.18 percent, from Monday to close the day at 19,344.15.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 0.14 point, or 0.01 percent, higher to finish at 1,555.04.

Nonferrous metal and bank-linked stocks where among the days notable issues that lost ground, while marine transportation and land transportation issues comprised the biggest gainers.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by 985 to 841, on the First Section and trading volume on the main section came to 1,575.96 million shares, up from Monday's volume of 1,408.97 million shares.

The turnover on the second trading day of the week totaled 1,986 billion yen (17.43 billion U.S. dollars).
