NEW DELHI, March 7 (Xinhua) -- India has reportedly expressed its concern over the alleged killing of a 22-year-old Indian fisherman by the Sri Lankan Navy, which has triggered a huge outrage in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
Quoting sources, local media reported that India has raised the issue with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and that Colombo has promised a "full and thorough probe" into the alleged killing of the fisherman.
The incident took place on Monday night when the fisherman from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu was fishing near the islet along with others and the Sri Lankan Navy arrived at the spot and allegedly opened fire. The fisherman was shot in the neck and died on the spot, while another fisherman sustained a bullet injury.
Local TV channels showed footage of over a thousand people gathering and protesting at the home of the dead fisherman, and reported that his family has refused to accept his body without action by the Indian and Lankan governments.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Palaniswami, has also condemned the killing, while the state's opposition leader M.K. Stalin has asked India to warn Sri Lanka "diplomatically". He has also demanded that India hold embassy-level talks with Colombo to resolve the issue one and for all.
