NEW DELHI, Mar. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least six people have been injured in an explosion on a passenger train in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh Tuesday, a senior police official said.

"The incident took place in a coach of 59320 Bhopal-Ujjain passenger train in the state's Shajapur district around 10 a.m. (local time). Six people sustained splinter injuries in the explosion," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While no one has been killed in the explosion, those injured have been admitted to a state-run hospital. "A medical team has been sent to the accident site and the injured passengers have been admitted to Kalapipal Government Hospital," said a spokesperson for the Indian Railways.

A probe has been ordered into the incident to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion, the police official said.

The state-run Indian Railways, the third largest network in the world, operates more than 12,000 passenger trains, carrying some 23 million people daily. But its safety record is not good as much of the railway equipment is out of date.

In 2015, the government announced investments of 137 billion U.S. dollars over five years to modernise and expand the ailing railways.
