BERLIN, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Bayer Leverkusen have appointed Tayfun Korkut as their care taker until the end of the current season, the Bundesliga club announced in an official statement on Monday.

One day after the departure of Roger Schmidt, who has been sacked due to poor results, Leverkusen presented with Tayfun Korkut a short-term solution on the vacant head-coach position.

"We have signed with Tayfun Korkut a coach with great knowledge of the subject. With him, we want to overcome our difficult situation and bring the season to a good end," Leverkusen's chief executive Michael Schade said.

Korkut knows the Bundesliga business as he already stood at the sidelines of Hannover and Kaiserslautern.

"The commitment is an expression of great confidence in my person. It is an opportunity to work for a top-flight club with very talented players. This is a motivating challenge that I am looking forward to," the 49-year-old coach said.

Bayer Leverkusen sit currently on the 10th place of the standings, eleven points adrift from the UEFA Champions League spot. The "Werkself" encounters Werder Bremen at the 24th round in Bundesliga on Friday. Enditem
