ABUJA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government on Monday said arrangement has been concluded for the closure of the capital city airport for six weeks due to proposed runaway rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation work on the runway at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja will begin on Wednesday, the government announced at a press conference.

During the temporary closure, Abuja-bound local and international passengers will have to fly to Kaduna, in the country's northwest region, and travel by bus, train or helicopter, into the capital city, the minister of state for aviation Hadi Sirika said at a press conference attended by his counterparts in the ministries of transport and information, the inspector general of police and a representative of the minister of power, works, and housing.

He said the runway needed rehabilitation because it was actually designed for use for 20 years but was used for 34 years without necessary repairs due to negligence.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the main airport serving the Nigerian capital city and named after the country's first President, Nnamdi Azikiwe, has an international and a domestic terminal that share its single runway.

According to Sirika, most local airlines had already agreed to, in the meantime, divert their Abuja-bound flights to Kaduna while talks have been held to convince international airlines to do the same.

He said while taking its decision, the government had already put the passengers' safety into consideration, noting all kinds of aircraft can now land at the Kaduna International Airport.

Safety equipment, including the instrument landing system, low-level wind shear, and other navigational aids had already been installed at the Kaduna International Airport, Sirika added.

Answering questions on security during the intercity movement of passengers, the Nigerian police chief Ibrahim Idris said a large number of personnel from various units and departments had been deployed to ensure the safety of passengers during the runway rehabilitation. Enditem
