BRUSSELS, March 2 (Xinhua) -- European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on Thursday proposed simpler rules of food safety management for small retail businesses.

These include guidelines for small retail businesses, such as groceries and butchers, on how to identify the most relevant biological, chemical and physical hazards at each stage of food production process.

Marta Hugas, head of EFSA's Biological Hazards and Contaminants unit, said that this would make it easier for small retailers to identify hazards and take action to counter them and could benefit consumers and food businesses alike.

In the past, many small food retailers had difficulties in complying with the requirements of the existing food safety management systems (FSMS) which are beyond the capacity of small retailers to apply them.

To help overcome these difficulties, EFSA said it developed simpler FSMS that are easy to understand and implement for the following five types of small food business: butchers, groceries, bakeries, fishmongers and ice cream shops.
