Iran denounces West's politicization of human rights issue

Source: Xinhua   2017-03-02 19:44:12

TEHRAN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A top Iranian diplomat has said that some Western states use the human rights issue as a tool for their political ends, Press TV reported on Thursday.

Iran and other countries such as Iraq need to cooperate to campaign against such Western attempts to politicize the issue of human rights, the report quoted Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi as saying.

"If this wrong approach continues, its repercussions will affect other independent and developing countries as well," Araqchi said at a meeting Wednesday with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Ja'afari in Geneva.

The two met there on the sidelines of the summit of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Araqchi congratulated Iraq on its appointment as a UNHRC member and expressed gratitude for Baghdad's opposition to the recent anti-Iran resolutions of the UN body.

Al-Ja'afari, for his part, stressed Iraq's resolve to oppose politically-motivated measures taken under the guise of human rights against Iran, Press TV said.

Both Araqchi and al-Ja'afari urged closer Tehran-Baghdad cooperation on the issue of human rights, the report said.
