Jordan denounces Israel excavations near Aqsa Mosque

Source: Xinhua   2017-03-02 03:10:47

AMMAN, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Wednesday sent a strongly-worded letter to Israel denouncing its excavations near the Umayyad remains adjacent to the southern wall of al-Aqsa Mosque, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordanian government said in the letter that the excavations works represent an attempt to alter the status quo in Jerusalem.

It is also a direct violation of the international laws and the peace agreement signed between Jordan and Israel in 1994, said the letter.

The Jordanian government called for an immediate halt of the Israeli excavations, said Mohammad Momani, Jordan's minister of state for media affairs.

Jordan was the second Arab country to sign a peace deal with Israel after Egypt. The Arab kingdom oversees the holy Islamic and Christian sites in east Jerusalem.
