ISLAMABAD, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit parts of Pakistan Tuesday evening, local meteorological office said.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department said on its website that the tremor, which hit the country at 6:42 p.m. local time (1342 GMT), originated from Tajikistan with a depth of 10 km.
The tremor was felt in Islamabad, capital of Pakistan. Local Urdu TV channel Dawn reported that the quake also jolted parts of east Punjab and northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
There were no immediate reports on damage and injuries in Pakistan, but the quake created panic among the people who rushed out of their houses, according to local reports.
Pakistan is located in one of the most earthquake prone areas with high vulnerability to earthquakes. Geographically, the country lies in the collision zone of the India tectonic plate to the south and the Eurasian plate to the north.
