TOKYO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two-thirds of municipal governments across Japan saw little change in their economic situation over the past year, a recent survey shows.
Fifteen percent of the governments reported economic improvement in their regions, while 13 percent were negative about their economic situation, according to a Kyodo News survey published Sunday.
The regions that reported economic improvement cited tourism as the major thrust while regions that reported economic contraction blamed declining population, according to the survey.
In Okinawa Prefecture, where tourism is growing, 37 percent of local governments reported positive economic growth, while only 5 percent reported negative economic development.
Other places are not so lucky though.
The survey was conducted from November 2016 to January 2017 among 1,720 local governments across the country.
