Mexico expects to draw more investment through infrastructure projects

Source: Xinhua   2017-02-28 14:56:50

MEXICO CITY, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Infrastructure development in Mexico will make the country more attractive to national and international investors, President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Monday.

"If we succeed in promoting infrastructure projects, in communications, health and education," Mexico will become more attractive, said Pena Nieto at the inauguration ceremony of a new freeway in the country's northern city of San Luis Potosi.

Projects like the new road will make Mexico, home to about 120 million consumers, more competitive, the president was quoted as saying by the state news agency Notimex.

Transportation infrastructure could benefit beyond the immediate community it serves, said Pena Nieto, adding that foreign companies come to Mexico "because there is development and infrastructure, because there is connectivity with the United States and other parts of the world."

Mexico has been ruffled by U.S. President Donald Trump's "America First" policies, which recently made U.S. automaker Ford announce that it has canceled its plans to build plants in Mexico.

However, the manufacturer later denied that its decision had been swayed by Trump's threats to impose high import tariffs on cars assembled in Mexico but sold in the United States.
