SARAJEVO, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) received 1,148,530 tourists in 2016, an increase of 11.6 percent year-on-year, official data revealed Monday.
According to data from BiH's Agency for Statistics, there were 2,376,743 overnight stays during the period, a 10.9-percent increase year-on-year.
In the overall number of recorded overnight stays, domestic tourists were 30.9 percent, whereas foreign tourists were 69.1 percent, according to the statistics agency.
Among the overnight stays of foreign tourists, tourists from Croatia made up the biggest group in 2016 (11.9 percent). They were followed by tourists from Serbia (8.4 percent), Turkey (8.1 percent), Italy (6.5 percent), Slovenia (6.0 percent), Poland (4.1 percent), and Germany (4.0 percent).
In terms of the length of stay, the first place was taken by tourists from Malta with an average stay of 5.5 nights, followed by tourists from South Africa with 3.9 nights, Ireland with 3.5 nights, Lithuania and Kuwait with 3.4 nights.
The capital of BiH is the most visited city and the second most visited city is Mostar.
Tourism in BiH is a fast-growing sector making up an important part of the country's economy. In recent years, BiH has seen a stable growth in the number of foreign tourists, showing great potential for the future.
