BEIJING -- Chinese President Xi Jinping and French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve agreed in Beijing on Wednesday to boost bilateral ties and cooperation in global affairs such as climate change.

In their meeting, Xi said a healthy China-France ties meet the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples, and are conducive to world peace and development.

Xi hailed the progress of ties since the two countries launched a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014, citing efficient cooperation in various areas and enhanced cultural exchanges.

CHENGDU -- After a 16-hour flight, American-born panda celebrity Bao Bao arrived home in southwest China Wednesday night, apparently looking well.

Local quarantine officials cleared Bao Bao to disembark at 8:00 p.m. The 3-year-old female panda was taken care of by American keeper Marty Dearie during the flight.

Dearie said Bao Bao ate and slept the whole way. "She ate as much as she would during the same time period at our zoo," he said. "It's gonna be a little sad... but we are very proud that we sent her back."

BEIJING -- China's Ministry of Agriculture Wednesday asked for better prevention of the spread of H7N9 bird flu following reports of human infections.

Calling the situation "complicated and grim," Vice Minister of Agriculture Yu Kangzhen ordered local agricultural agencies to intensify monitoring of poultry markets and step up disinfection programs to minimize risks.

Yu also called on efforts against other animal epidemics and help in upgrading the poultry industry.

GENEVA -- A senior Chinese diplomat on Wednesday welcomed the upcoming peace talks on Syria in Geneva and stressed the role of the United Nations in the mediation to end the lasting conflict in the war-torn country.

The Chinese government's Special Envoy on Syria, Xie Xiaoyan, on Wednesday met with the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. They exchanged views on the forthcoming intra-Syria talks and the Syrian political process.

"The resumption of the peace talks on Syria should strictly follow the requirements of the UN Security Council resolution 2254, and put efforts on promoting mutual trust so as to achieve progresses as soon as possible," Xie said.

NAIROBI -- Thirty-five Kenyan students will depart to China at the end of February on a scholarship program to prepare them for Kenya's new railway.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the students will receive undergraduate education at Beijing Jiaotong University, a top university in China for railway studies.

The 35 students are the second batch of Kenyan students going to study in China under the China Communications Construction Company scholarship program which aims to train 100 Kenya students in railway studies.
