DAVAO CITY, the Philippines, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- A magnitude-4.6 quake struck parts of southern Philippines on Thursday morning, state seismologists said.

The tectonic earthquake which occurred at around 9:50 a.m. local time was centered some 9 km northwest of the regional capital Davao City at a depth of 15 km, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tremor was felt in Davao, a city of more than 1 million people, while feeble shaking was reported in neighboring provinces in southern Mindanao region.

Quakes of such magnitude and depth are not expected to cause damage, Phivolcs said.

The Philippine sits on the region called the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates collide, causing frequent quakes and volcanic activity.

Earlier this month, a magnitude-6.7 quake struck northern Mindanao island, killing seven people in the city of Surigao and injuring over 100 others.
