BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's consumer price index (CPI) fell by 0.3 percent in January 2017 compared to the previous month owing to a decrease in prices of transport as well as clothing and footwear, according to official statistics released on Wednesday.

In its monthly CPI report, Brunei's Department of Economic Planning and Development said the Clothing and Footwear index fell by 2.1 percent.

It said the Transport index decreased by 1.0 percent followed by Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance index (1.6 percent). These were mainly due to lower prices of passenger transport by air, furniture and furnishings, household appliances as well as clothing materials.

Indexes that experienced increases were Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.4 percent), Health (1.2 percent), and Recreation and Culture (0.2 percent).

Education Index remained unchanged.

CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period. Brunei's list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household. Enditem
