KUNMING, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A grey-bellied Tragopan has been caught on camera in southwest China's Yunnan Province, scientists confirmed Wednesday.

Pictures of the adult male were taken on November 19 last year in Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan, after several infrared cameras were set up in the region.

It is the first time that pictures of the endangered bird have taken in China, said scientists with the Chinese Academy of Sciences institute of zoology, .

Grey-bellied Tragopans are under first-class state protection in China and usually found in northwest Yunnan Province and southeast Tibet Autonomous Region at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 meters.

With two brightly colored horns on their heads, these birds are commonly called "horned pheasants." The species is rarely seen in the wild due to loss of habitat.
