WARSAW, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Poland's border guard is planning to build 13 new observation towers along the eastern border of the country, also the external border of the European Union, Polish Border Guard Commander-in-Chief Marek Lapinski said on Tuesday.

According to Polish Press Agency, the towers will be equipped with high-tech thermal imaging, optical and monitoring systems, enabling the guards to monitor the border around the clock. The image will be streamed to local control posts and, when movement is detected, a patrol, drone, or plane will be sent to the site. Where building of such towers is impossible, the border guard would use mobile night and day monitoring centers.

So far, 25 installations of this kind are placed along Poland's borders with Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.

The border guard also plans to buy a light helicopter with a modern observation system and two planes aimed at patrolling Poland's sea border. The cost will be covered by the European Internal Security Fund in 90 percent.

According to a government program of modernization of the armed services, police, fire brigade and the border guard are to receive over 9 billion zloty (2.21 billion U.S. dollars) for investment projects, weapons, and wage hikes to the end of 2020. Enditem
