GENEVA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- About 35,5 million hotel stays were generated in Switzerland last year, down 0.3 percent from 2015, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) reported Tuesday.
FSO revealed that the number of stays attributed to Swiss guests increased by 1.2 percent (16.2 million stays) while the number of foreign guests registered a 1.5 percent drop, reaching 19.3 million.
Figures show that the number of EU guests staying in Switzerland decreased by 1.5 percent in 2016, with the biggest drop recorded by German visitors (minus 3.9 percent).
After many years of growth, the number of guests from Asia also decreased last year, with a 3.4 percent drop in overnight hotel stays documented in the reviewed period.
FSO indicated that seven out of 14 Swiss tourist regions registered a drop in overnight hotel stays in 2016 compared to two years ago.
