HOUSTON, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least two tornadoes struck the U.S. city of San Antonio later Sunday and early Monday, causing extensive damage to homes and injuring five people, the U.S. National Weather Service confirmed on Monday.

In San Antonio, a city in the southern part of the U.S. state of Texas, a tornado hit a residential area on the north side of the city Sunday night or Monday morning, damaging at least 43 homes and causing minor injuries to five people.

A second tornado touched down on the northeast side of the city later Monday morning, damaging at least 30 homes, some of them were destroyed.

About 45,000 homes lost power on Sunday night due to the severe thunderstorms and as of early Monday morning, 22,000 homes remained without power.

Currently, emergency crews are still working across the city to help clean up the damaged areas following the overnight storms.
