TAIPEI, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's export orders saw year-on-year growth of 5.2 percent in the first month of 2017, on the back of high demand for telecommunication and electronic products, according to data released by the island's economic authority Monday
Export orders for the month stood at 35.97 billion U.S. dollars, a 12.8 percent decline from the previous month.
According to the department, orders for telecommunication and electronic products, precise instruments, along with rubber and metal products led to the increase in January.
The department's statistics show that the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong remain among the biggest buyers, with their combined orders totaling 8.7 billion U.S. dollars, or nearly one quarter of the total January order volume. Orders from southeast Asian countries fell 7 percent from a year ago.
The authority forecast a reduction of general export orders in February as orders for electronics and telecommunication products will likely drop during the "slack season."
