SKOPJE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- A project funded by the European Union was launched Thursday in Macedonia, aiming at increasing capacity to protect human rights here, local media reported.

Daniel Schmidt from the Council of Europe's South East Europe department told reporters at the launch ceremony that the project would primarily improve the capacity of the courts through training of judges and prosecutors.

The project will target instances of degrading and inhumane behavior and impunity, he said, adding it will help the courts better implement European standards in human rights protection.

The chief justice of the Constitutional Court Nikola Ivanovski and academy director Aneta Arnaudovska said that their institutions have worked to implement the standards of the European Convention of Human Rights and to help better protect human rights for years.

According to the Macedonian ministry of justice, the project will be implemented over 18 months.
