VIENTIANE, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Laos plans to construct the nation's first vehicle quality inspection center aiming to scrutinize and ensure the safety of road transport in the country.
The project will focus on developing a facility that inspects and guarantees the quality of vehicles in Laos, Director and Chief Executive officer of UMG Lao, Chalongchai Chayutrapong told Lao state-run media Vientiane Times on Wednesday.
The project costing over 10 million U.S. dollars will start in 2018 with investment by UMG Lao.
The new inspection center will be established on a five-hectare site with testing facilities, offices, storage and a training center for drivers, Chalongchai added.
He said the new center would serve as a hub for resource development, facilitate inspection services and field standards research, and play an important role in assuring vehicle quality in the country.
Acting Director General of Department of Standardisation and Metrology under the Ministry of Sciences and Technology, Viengthong Vongthavilay said the ministry and UMG Lao had been working together so construction of the facility could begin some time next year.
