RAMALLAH, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- A senior Palestinian official called on U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday to urge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop settlement building and bring peace process back on track.

Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), told "Voice of Palestine" Radio that "We hope when President Trump meets Netanyahu, he would urge the latter to halt settlement and make peace."

"We hope that President Trump tells Netanyahu stop your policy of dictation and that there us an opportunity to make peace by establishing an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital," said Erekat.

President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu are scheduled to meet in Washington on Wednesday. The meeting between the two is the first ever since Trump has taken office last month in the White House.

"The two-state solution "is an American, Israeli, Palestinian and regional interest and the cornerstone for achieving peace, security and stability in the region."

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli radio reported that Netanyahu arrived in Washington, where he held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Sate Rex W. Tillerson before meeting President Trump.

According to the Radio, the talks between Trump and Netanyahu would focus on the Palestinian cause, the Iranian file and the situation in Syria, besides boosting the bilateral ties between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Reiad Mansour, the Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations, stated earlier that the UN Security Council will hold its regular monthly session and it is scheduled to debate the situation in the Palestinian territories.
