Thailand's 20th Buddhist patriarch ordained

BANGKOK, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Sunday officially anointed Somdet Phra Maha Muniwong as the country's 20th Buddhist supreme patriarch at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or Wat Phra Kaew.

In a televised Buddhist ceremony on Sunday, the Bureau of Royal Scribes and Royal Decorations announced the royal command appointing the new supreme patriarch.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Tuesday named Somdet Phra Maha Muniwong, an 89-year-old monk and abbot of Wat Ratchabophit as the new supreme patriarch after the position had remained vacant for several years.

Thailand's last supreme patriarch Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara died in October 2013 at the age of 100.

Somdet Phra Maha Muniwong is reputed for his ability in in-depth meditation and works at forest monasteries.

The supreme patriarch is the head of the order of Buddhist monks in Thailand, a country where about 95 percent of its population is said to follow Buddhism.
