Tree falls at Singapore Botanic Gardens, killing 1, injuring 4

SINGAPORE, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- A huge Tembusu tree fell at Singapore Botanic Gardens on Saturday afternoon, killing one and injuring four people, local media reported.

Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the incident of a fallen tree at Singapore Botanic Gardens at approximately 4:25 p.m., and five injured were taken to the National University Hospital. The casualties, including two children, were conveyed to hospital in three ambulances.

In the latest update from National Parks Board (NParks), one of the injured passed away, said the Straits Times.

The tree had fallen near Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage at Lawn W along Upper Palm Valley Road. NParks added that it is investigating the cause of the tree fall.

The incident interrupted an event organized by the High Commission of Canada which was scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Located at the fringe of Singapore's main shopping belt, Singapore Botanic Gardens is the only tropical garden to be honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
