RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Over a million Brazilian construction workers have lost their jobs in the last two years due to the deep economic crisis the country is going through.
A report published Friday by the Getulio Vargas Foundation economic studies center showed that some 1.08 million construction workers in Brazil have lost their jobs since 2014.
The study found that 3.57 million people worked in the construction sector across Brazil in October 2014, while the number had lowered to 2.48 million people in December 2016. It also found that some 414,000 construction jobs disappeared in 2016 alone.
According to the report, the future prospect for the sector is not rosy, despite short-term incentives that encourage the hiring of the workforce in the sector.
The incentives include the My House, My Life program, under which the government plans to build around 600,000 new houses.
Brazil's GDP contracted by 3.8 percent in 2015, while market forecasts predict a 3.5 percent contraction in 2016.
