VIENTIANE, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Amateur Athletics Federation (LAAF) will support gold medalists from the Sixth National School Games to compete in international events in 2017.

The best Lao U18 level athletes will have an opportunity to vie at the Asian level Youth Athletic Games in Thailand this April, the ASEAN Schools Games in Singapore in July, the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia in August, and the Youth Games in Indonesia in November, said LAAF General Secretary Sithixay Sackpraseuth on Friday.

The LAAF will organize local competitions this year in 2017 as a selection guide. "We will hold track and field events in capital Vientiane in April to test and select the best athletes before they compete at the schools games in Singapore," he was quoted by Lao state-run Vientiane Times as saying.

The association will send more than 10 athletes to participate in the school games in Singapore. At the previous ASEAN Schools Games in Thailand last July, the Lao team won four bronze medals in track and field events.

Sithixay said in addition, some young gold medalists from the Sixth National School Games of Laos held during Feb. 1-9 would join the national athletic team to compete at the 29th SEA Games in Malaysia. The Ministry of Education and Sports has given a quota of Laos' 12 best athletes to compete at the SEA Games.

Meanwhile, the federation is summarizing the results of the 6th school games' track and field events to select the most talented students. Enditem
