NAIROBI, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and various stakeholders said Thursday they have finalized plans to carry out aerial census of elephants in the expansive Tsavo-Mkomazi ecosystem starting next week.

KWS said the results of the Feb. 12-24 exercise would help wildlife officials establish the current elephant and other large mammals population size and distribution and compare with results of past aerial counts.

Tsavo-Mkomazi is located in the southeast of Kenya and northeast of Tanzania, covering an area of 48,656 square kilometers.

Tsavo ecosystem censuses have been conducted every three years since 2002. Censuses are a requirement of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) elephant monitoring program. Enditem
