Bhutan to print 1 million commemorative banknotes to mark first birthday of crown prince

THIMPHU, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, or the central bank, has decided to print 1 million commemorative banknotes of 100 denomination Ngultrum to mark the first birthday of the country's crown prince.

The design for the commemorative banknotes was launched on Feb. 5, coinciding with the crown prince's birthday. The printing of the banknotes is being done in Switzerland and set to be completed by September this year.

As the crown prince turned one year old on Feb. 5, King Jigme and Queen Jetsun of Bhutan released a picture of the prince a few days ahead of his birthday.

The picture went onto headlines across several international newspapers and news channels.

In Bhutan, the entire nation marked the birthday of the little prince with dance performances in almost every schools and institutes. The local people offered butter lamps in huge numbers. Some even conducted mass cleaning campaigns.
