Nairobi bourse turnover slides after three straight gains

NAIROBI, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) turnover slid for the first time Tuesday after recording gains in three consecutive trading sessions.

The market transacted some 19.3 million shares worth 5.5 million U.S. dollars from 51 million shares valued at 9.1 million U.S. dollars in the previous session.

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecom service provider, was the day's top trader after moving 9.8 million shares as its price fell marginally to 0.17 dollars. On Monday, the leading telecom vibrantly traded 24.4 million shares after a surge of 1.3 percent.

Equity Bank was the second top trader with 2.1 million shares at a high of 0.26 dollars, a surge of 2 percent.

Uganda's electricity generator Umeme was the third top stock at the bourse Tuesday as it moved 2 million shares at 0.13 dollars, a high of 4 percent.

Barclays Bank and Kenya Power closed the list of the day's top five movers after exchanging 1.3 million and 682,200 shares respectively at 0.07 and 0.06 dollars.

Despite the drop in trading, a rise in prices of some large stocks lifted the NSE 20 Share Index up 15.4 points to 2,882.74. Monday, and the index gained 5 points.

The All Share Index (NASI) closed the day at 125.00 from 125.06 while the NSE 25 Share Index stood at 3,236.09 from 3,223.10. Enditem
