BRATISLAVA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The crime rate in Slovakia was the lowest in 2016 since its independence in 1993, thanks to security improvements surrounding the EU presidency of Slovakia, an official said on Monday.

"The improvement in terms of security should be viewed in the context of Slovakia's EU Council presidency in the second half of 2016, which necessarily required tighter security measures," Slovak interior minister Robert Kalinak told a press conference.

A total of 69,635 crimes were registered in Slovakia last year, with the police identifying the offenders in almost 57 percent of cases.

"With property crimes, such as thefts, becoming rarer again last year, the police focused more on latent crimes, such as tax fraud and domestic violence," Kalinak said.

The overall crime map didn't change much in 2016, with Bratislava and Kosice regions having the highest crime figures. Kosice had the highest number of crimes, at 4,500. Enditem
