Spain unemployment rises in January

MADRID, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of Spanish people registered as unemployed in January rose by 57,257 people to 3.7 million, official data revealed on Thursday.

That meant a 1.55-percentage-point increase of unemployment rate from the previous month, according to figures released by the Spanish ministry of employment and social security.

However, on a year-on-year basis, unemployed people in Spain fell by 390,524 in January, the ministry said.

Regarding sectors, the number of people in the agriculture sector who became unemployed rose by 4,102 on a monthly basis. Unemployed people increased by 66,929 in the services sector due to the end of the Christmas season.

Meanwhile, unemployment fell in the industry sector by 1,103 people and by 7,833 in the construction sector.

Spain's secretary of state for employment, Juan Pablo Riesgo, highlighted that unemployment usually rose in January and argued that it was one of the smallest monthly rises.
