MADRID, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Spain has offered support to Mexico in the face of "complicated situation", referring to Mexico's ties with the United States, local media reported on Thursday.

In a phone conversation on Wednesday night with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy offered Nieto "solidarity and support in order to achieve good relations in the region", Rajoy said in a tweet.

Both leaders agreed to "make joint efforts in favor of a fair, simple and reasonable solution in order to overcome the current situation", according to El Pais, one of Spain's largest-circulation daily newspaper.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the "immediate construction of a physical wall on the southern border". Trump also maintained that Mexico would ultimately bear the cost of building the wall.

Rajoy told Nieto that he was confident the U.S. and Mexico would be able to resolve their issues through dialogues and highlighted the need for "good neighborly relations".

The Mexican President's office issued a statement to thank Spain for its solidarity.
