CANBERRA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Australian National University (ANU) has been rated in the top 10 of the world's most international universities, according to the 2017 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
ANU, based in the nation's capital city, Canberra, is the highest ranked Australian university on the list of institutions with the "strongest global connections", and was ranked seventh between the University of Oxford (sixth) and the University of Cambridge (eighth).
In a statement released overnight, ANU's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Schmidt said the acknowledgement proved the university was "fulfilling its founding mission" to ensure Australia's education system has a strong presence in global research and learning.
"The ranking reflects the unique role ANU plays in linking Australia to the world," Schmidt said.
"ANU is doing its part to bring Canberra to the world and the world to Canberra."
Meanwhile the university's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Marnie Hughes-Warrington said the ranking was an accurate reflection of ANU's multicultural approach, with a significant presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
"Being an international university is part of our DNA," Hughes-Warrington said on Thursday.
"We are home to leading centers for the study of the politics, economics and societies of the Asia-Pacific, including specialist areas on China, Japan, Indonesia, Myanmar and the nations of the South Pacific."
Switzerland' ETH Zurich Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich was the highest-ranked 'international university'.
