MEXICO CITY, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Mexico has exported 100,000 tons of avocados to the U.S. for the traditional glut of guacamole consumed during the Super Bowl, which is to be held on Feb. 5, the government announced on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that avocado exports over the last week, ahead of the Super Bowl, had reached 200 million U.S. dollars in value. The amount is equal to the total 2016 production of the State of Mexico, the country's third-largest avocado producer.

During the three hours of the game alone, to be disputed this year between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons, Americans will consume 35,000 tons of the green fruit, according to data from the Mexican avocado association APEAM.

Mexico is the largest global producer of avocado, accounting for around 70 percent of total production, said Minister of Agriculture Jose Calzada in a statement.

Between January and November 2016, avocado exports to the U.S. reached 711,766 tons for a value of 1.61 billion U.S. dollars, a 14 percent rise year-on-year.
