ROME, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and President of the European Parliament (EP) Antonio Tajani on Monday offered solidarity to Canada over the shooting at a mosque in Quebec.
The attack on Sunday -- which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said was a terrorist act -- left six people killed and eight injured.
"Italy's government is close to the victims, their relatives, and the whole Canadian Muslim community, as well as to Canada's government and prime minister," Gentiloni told a press conference, after a meeting with freshly elected Tajani here in the morning.
The EP president stressed the EU firmly believes in "the dialogue among religions."
"We (the EP) have been working in this direction, and will keep doing so," Tajani told reporters.
"Violence is never the answer, and we have to start working harder among young people in schools to make them understand that this (terrorism) is not a path to follow."
After expressing his condolences of the families of the victims and to all Canadians, Tajani said Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau was expected to pay an official visit to the European Parliament on Feb. 25.
