RABAT, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan King Mohammed VI left for Ethiopia on Friday to attend the upcoming African Union (AU) Summit, official news agency MAP reported.
Last week, the Moroccan parliament unanimously approved the Constitutive Act of the African Union, its additional protocol and the bill on the approval of the act to allow the Moroccan government to continue its bid to rejoin the AU.
The council of ministers, chaired by the king, approved the draft on Jan. 10.
Morocco left the Organization of African Unity, the predecessor of the AU, in 1984.
Last September, the North African country made an official request to rejoin the organization.
In recent weeks, the Moroccan king has visited several African countries to seek support for its return to the AU.
The 28th AU Summit is slated to take place on Jan. 30-31 in the Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa. Enditem
