ARUSHA, Tanzania, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were trapped after a small gold mine collapsed in Tanzania's northwestern region of Geita on Thursday, local police said.
Mponjoli Mwabulambo, Geita Regional Police Commander, said the accident occurred around 4 a.m. at the RZT gold mine in Nyarugusu located on the western shores of Lake Victoria.
Rescue efforts involving the police, fire department and other stakeholders were under way to try to rescue people trapped inside the mine shaft.
The regional police chief said by late Thursday neither survivors nor bodies had been recovered from the collapsed mine.
"We cannot say for certain right now exactly how many people were inside the mine when it collapsed," he said, adding: "We don't know if they are still alive or otherwise." Enditem
