Lula's wife undergoes new surgical procedure after stroke

Source: Xinhua   2017-01-26 12:08:58

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's former First Lady Marisa Leticia Lula da Silva, wife of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on Wednesday underwent a new surgical procedure.

Mrs. Lula had a hemorrhagic stroke on Tuesday afternoon. She then was taken to the Sirio Libanes Hospital, a state-of-the-art private hospital in Sao Paulo, where she received treatment to halt the brain hemorrhage.

According to her doctors, Mrs. Lula was diagnosed with an aneurism over a decade ago, but at the time no surgical intervention was needed, and she was only subjected to clinical monitoring. That aneurism ruptured on Tuesday.

Mrs. Lula was placed in a medically-induced coma to facilitate her recovery on Tuesday evening. Doctors did not predict when she will leave the hospital. Her health status is considered stable at the moment.

The head of the medical team, Roberto Kalil Filho -- who is also the physician of President Lula and several other presidents -- said that in the next few days, doctors will know more about her situation as the case evolves.

According to him, she will remain sedated for a few days before any attempts to lift her from the coma.

President Lula presided over the country from 2003 to 2010.
