MOGADISHU, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Somali president will be elected on Feb. 8 in a joint parliamentary session, a new commission formed to oversee the exercise announced Wednesday.

Presidential Electoral Commission Chairman Abdirahman Dualeh Beileh said in a statement that the registration of presidential candidates will start on Thursday and conclude on Sunday.

"The candidates will deliver speeches at the House of the People on Feb. 2 until Feb. 5, and the presidential election date is on Feb. 8," Beileh said in a statement.

Somalia will hold an indirect presidential where MPs will choose the country's new leader, after earlier dates for the election in September, October, November and finally on December 28, 2016 were all missed.

The electoral team will have two key meetings, on Jan. 30 and on Feb. 6-7 respectively, to deliberate on the election modalities. A list of 17 senators and lawmakers who will sit in the committee has been released.

The international community has called for fair, free and credible presidential elections. Enditem
