Indonesia to revitalize nearly 100 airports to help accelerating economy

JAKARTA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian state-owned enterprises ministry will revitalize nearly 100 airports with 800 to 1000 meters runaway across the country to help exploring the potential of the economy, official said here on Tuesday.

The revitalization would be undertaken for the air ports located in the area with high potential of economic growth and high number of population, and producing exported products or commodities, said Arif Wibowo, president director of leading state-owned airliner, PT Garuda Indonesia.

He said that the authorities have been exploring such kind of areas with their airport un-developed.

The director said that the revitalization will be carried out within the next five years, still there are several airports that are prioritized to be developed earlier.

"There are 16 airports which are ready for revitalization soon," and the rest will be afterward, he said.

Indonesia is an archipelago country and home to over 17,500 islands.

The country is the world's biggest exporter of crude palm oil, thermal coal, and the world's third biggest exporter of rubber and cocoa, as well as home to the world's second-biggest copper mine.

President Joko Widodo who came into office in October 2014 aims to pursue over 7 percent GDP growth at the end of his five-year tenure.
