WARSAW, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- A complex throat area transplant surgery performed by Polish Oncology Center in Gliwice, southern Poland, has been chosen as the world's best microsurgical case 2016 by the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM).
According to the hospital's statement released on Wednesday, the transplant was performed by a team of surgeons led by Professor Adam Maciejewski.
The object of surgery was a 37-year-old patient suffering from laryngeal cancer and other ailments.
The extensive surgery involved organs including the larynx, trachea, esophagus and thyroid gland, muscles and skin.
The case was chosen over around 300 presentations submitted by surgeons from around the world and received 93 percent of votes.
Few years ago, another work of Gliwice doctors, a face transplantation, received recognition of the ASRM and was chosen the world's best.
ASRM was established in 1984 to promote the art and science of microsurgery and complex reconstruction and to establish a forum for teaching, research and discussion of microsurgical methods.
