Azerbaijan marks 1000th anniversary of Zhou Dunyi's birth

BAKU, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- A scientific seminar commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the birth of the Chinese Neo-Confucian philosopher and cosmologist Zhou Dunyi was held here on Wednesday.

The Confucius Institute of the Azerbaijan's University of Languages hosted the seminar under the theme of "Neo-Confucianism as the traditional Chinese system of philosophy."

The seminar has brought together Azerbaijani scholars and experts in China who exchanged views on Neo-Confucianism as a moral, ethical, and metaphysical Chinese philosophy.

Director of the Confucius Institute, Professor Rafig Abbasov told about the origin and development of Neo-Confucianism in China, emphasized the importance of the teaching of this philosophy that regards the world as an organic whole. Other speakers touched upon the fundamental ideas and practical significance of this philosophical movement, the role it plays in Chinese philosophy, the ethical and religious aspects of Neo-Confucianism.

The seminar also highlighted the life and thoughts of the Chinese thinker Zhou Dunyi, who is considered the most important precursor of Neo-Confucianism and the founder of the Cheng-Zhu school of this philosophy.
