BRUSSELS, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The European Court of Auditors (ECA) on Tuesday said in a new report that the European Union (EU) should implement current policies more effectively to combat food waste.

According to an ECA statement, auditors believed that though a number of EU policies had the potential of combating food waste, their potential was not being used to the fullest, and coordination at the European Commission level was lacking.

In the report, auditors recommended the Commission strengthen EU strategy to combat food waste, consider food waste in future impact assessments, and identify and resolve legal obstacles to food donation, said the release.

Food waste is a global problem. Current estimates indicate that around one third of food produced globally for human consumption is wasted or lost, according to the release. This waste represents huge economic and environmental costs.

Auditors said that actions should be targeted along the entire food supply chain, and the emphasis should be put on prevention.
