Two Algerian men caught by police after escape from Lisbon airport

LISBON, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Two Algerian men who had escaped from Lisbon airport on Thursday were detained in the early hours of Friday morning at the Orient Station here, according to Lusa News Agency.

The two men were caught by agents of the criminal investigation department of the Portuguese Security Police (PSP) after they escaped from Lisbon airport as they were being forced to take a flight back to North Africa.

PSP spokesperson Hugo Palma said the two men did not resist being detained.

Local newspapers reported that the men would stay at a temporary center due to a serious risk of them escaping.

According to Publico, one of the men detained, Hichem Guellil, will be held in custody by the Foreigners and Border Service (SEF) to be sent to his country of origin "in the shortest possible time."

The other man, Mohamed Mechani, will also stay in a temporary detention facility until the next steps of his judicial process.

Four Algerian men and one Algerian woman in their 20s tried to escape from Lisbon airport on Thursday as they were being forced to take a flight back to North Africa. Two of them escaped, while the rest were caught, according to local media.
