MADRID, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed that civil guards have detained two "highly radicalized" extremists who were "loyal to the Islamic State (IS)" in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Friday.

The Interior Ministry said the pair "formed part of a cohesive network which had reached a high level of determination to carry out terrorist activities."

One of the arrests took place in the "El Principe" neighborhood in Ceuta, which is considered to be a breeding group for radicalism, and where civil guards were carrying out searches with metal detectors looking for weapons and other possible evidence of the two detainees.

The second arrest was in the Villajovita area of the town, where no arrests of suspected extremists had previously been made.

They were the first two detentions of suspected extremists on Spanish territory since the start of the New Year.

It brought to 180 the number of suspected extremists detained in Spain since a level 4 terrorist alert was announced in the country in June 2015.
