LONDON, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Swansea Bay project, a tidal lagoon renewable power project, has been backed by a government-commissioned review, the BBC reported on Thursday.

The independent review led by industry expert Charles Hendry, former energy minister, said the 1.3 billion pounds (1.59 billion U.S. dollars) tidal lagoon project would make a "strong contribution" to the Britain's energy supply and give the hopes of other cheaper alternatives being available in the future.

Tidal Lagoon Power estimates that its lagoons would generate power for 120 years.

According to Hendry, if look at the cost spread out over the entire lifetime of 120 years, it comes out at aobut 30 pence (37 cents) per household for the next 30 years, a price less than a pint of milk.

The British government still needs to agree on the deal. And a marine licence would also need to be approved.

A tidal lagoon is a "U" shaped breakwater, built out from the coast which has a bank of hydro turbines in it. Electricity is generated on both the incoming and outgoing tides everyday.
